Master Details Page - Option to Open in Same Window#165

Opening new windows is a little disconcerting for a user. I’d rather have the details page open in the same window and then I can put a back button and the user doesn’t end up having a bunch of windows open.

Another example, I often put a new table with links to a Master Details page which opens a new window and on that page I have another related table with Master Details links, the windows just keep getting opened.

I agree, opening new windows instead of letting the user choose is often considered a bad practice. If there is no possibility for a choice, then it should open in the same window. Fortunately in the preferences there’s the modal option instead of window though, I wonder have you tried that.

I’ve used the modal option but you can’t design the modal to look like what you want. It’s pretty limited and not nearly as clear as organizing a nice layout on a webpage. Opening in a new page lets you use shortcodes on the page that get replaced with details from that row in the table. The page can be designed to look really nice. Unfortunately, because the details page gets opened in a new window, users end up with a whole bunch of windows open whereas opening in the same page would let me just put a back button on the page for a really nice interface.
